It is helpful to know there are different ways of monastic prayer, and the Archbishop saw the "Face of God" in the monks who were petitioning.
I appreciate the hospitality in my visit last month. Being a recent convert I had no idea who St. Benedict was or the power of the medal. When I saw it something told me I needed it. Struggling with sin I felt an instant change and strengthening of will as soon as I placed the medal onto the chain with my Crucifix. I had no idea where this came from until I started researching the St. Benedict Medal and I firmly believe it was the Holy Spirit who told me I needed it.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3330433763214834596.post-31052221577431284212010-11-11T09:39:47.061-05:002010-11-11T09:39:47.061-05:00Greetings this day from Oblate (and Veteran) Theo ...Greetings this day from Oblate (and Veteran) Theo and wife Mercie Therese.

Pax,
-TheoTeófilo de Jesúshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03013188371223503953noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3330433763214834596.post-18050827486399612312010-08-15T17:48:41.644-04:002010-08-15T17:48:41.644-04:00Rest in Peace Brother PatRest in Peace Brother PatUnknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17065106700202170823noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3330433763214834596.post-15515529315421751002010-08-06T08:11:44.854-04:002010-08-06T08:11:44.854-04:00Blessed am I to experience a transformation of spi...Blessed am I to experience a transformation of spirit at the Saint Vincent Basilica on Friday, August 6, amoung those blessed Benedictines who continue to help me become.

GratefullyUnknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18155224742920192661noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3330433763214834596.post-73028581981763124132010-07-06T14:45:24.497-04:002010-07-06T14:45:24.497-04:00I remember I was about 14 when I first heard of Do...I remember I was about 14 when I first heard of Dolores Hart. At that time even Elvis movies were not recommended by the Catholic church as suitable viewing for adolescents. I did think she was lovely & although raised Catholic myself, was taken aback she became a nun and left all her movie success behind. I knew about religeous callings but, somehow in the 60s, it seemed to me unbelievable. Now it is 40 some odd years later. I now truly understand that she was chosen. By her prior fame, she shines a light on her religeous community. The community of nuns she was drawn to, embraced her as she did them. Like the rare desert flower in bloom, she has survived, intact, pure of blossom and shows by example to this world, the strength of choice and prayer. Further more, Sister Dolores, through God's grace, lends her artistic skills to allow celebration of the more joyful uplifting aspects of all artistic endeavors. May her community's theatre be always blessed by the Holy Spirit! Through rare interviews such as this, I come away very touched with how Sister Dolores is living her vocation. Truly, an inspirational story of one nun which is much needed in this day and age of declining belief and compromised values.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3330433763214834596.post-53939324817655184572010-06-29T12:50:40.710-04:002010-06-29T12:50:40.710-04:00Thank you Br Gabriel! Now in the U.S. one seldom even sees a friar in a habit let alone wearing sandals. Back in the late '40s and early '50s while attending Franciscan run schools the friars always wore their sandals (if a bit self-consciously) with their robes and often with their black clerical suits. Now the few friars seen in a robe seem always to be shod and often rather expensively. This is also true in photographs in their publications and internet sites. I realize many things have changed since the 1950's but the Franciscan habit including sandals was an icon, an ultimate, outward symbol of committment to an ideal.

I've read that the Rule stated explicitly: Shoes are forbidden by the rule and may be worn only in case of necessity, for these sandals are substituted and the feet are bare." Of course the Rule may have been altered to a matter of indvidual choice or else it must be that now shoes are always necessary. In either event, that outward symbol has been largely lost in a time when symbols of wordly things have proliferated and surround us.

I've heard the argument that religious habits (and specifically sandals) have been thought to discourage vocations, but in an era where the younger and even middle aged men are seen in flip-flops with all manner of dress, this seems absurd.

Another effect of the lack of the habit among religious orders is that many may not even be aware the Orders exist anymore which certainly can't encourage even curiousity, let alone vocations.

Perhaps the notable exception to the disappearance of sandals among the friars is the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, who with their scruffy, seemingly unkempt beards and their controversial street antics have drawn much attention, and according to some accounts an upsurge in their novitiate. Apparently there are those who are not put off by either scruffy, unkempt beards (unfortunately) or barefoot sandals that are even worn in less than ideal weather conditions. It would be good to see the less "fringe-y" orders grasp the importance of these symbols, return to the true habit and the realization that shoes are not always a "necessity."Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
